Competition is a part of life and has literally shaped all living things. When done in a safe environment children can develop the will and temperament to compete with grace and courtesy. Maria Montessori says in the Discovery of the Child that 'unlike aimless play, competition invokes a sense of rivalry and can lead to moral progress.'
